Madrasah Aliyah Negeri MAN 1 Garut merupakan alih fungsi dari Sekolah Persiapan IAIN SP IAIN Sunan Gunung Djati cabang Garut yang didirikan pada tanggal 1 Juli 1968. Kemudian berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Menteri Agama RI Nomor 17 tahun 1978 tanggal 30 Maret 1978. SP IAIN dirubah menjadi Madrasah Aliyah Negeri MAN 1 Garut. Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Garut terletak di Jalan A, Yani Koropeak Garut telpon 0262 233550. MAN 1 Garut merupakan salah satu dari tiga MAN Perintis Program Keterampilan di Indonesia Bersama MAN Kendal Jawa Tengah dan MAN Jember Jawa Timur. Rintisan Program Keterampilan dimulai tahun 1988 melalui bantuan UNDP/UNESCO Project INS 85/036. Program Keterampilan ini terus berlangsung pada tahun kedua yang juga dilaksanakan oleh UNDP/UNESCO. Selanjutnya berkembang hingga tahap ketiga yang didanai oleh Islamic Development Bank. Pada tahun 2017 MAN 1 Garut ditetapkan sebagai Madrasah Penyelenggara Program Keterampilan berdasarkan SK. Dirjen Pendis 4924 tahun 2017. MAN 1 Garut pada tahun 2020 ditetapkan sebagai MA Plus Keterampilan. MAN 1 Garut memiliki siswa sebanyak 1044 orang. yang terbagi menjadi 30 Kelas masing masing tingkatan 10 kelas. Banyaknya Pendidik sebanyak 75 orang dan Tenaga Pendidik sebanyak 25 orang.
